The Pizza Box, Old Telegraph Road is Worth Every Bite — An Honest Review
The Pizza Box on Old Telegraph Road has been on our radar for a while, and Brandon finally made the trip out to see what all the talk is about. Short version: it did not disappoint. Not even a little bit.
What Brandon Ordered
Brandon kept it straightforward for his first visit, which is usually the right move at a new spot. He went with a pepperoni round pizza and an order of classic cheese bread. Two items that any pizza place should be able to nail, and two items that tell you a lot about whether a place actually knows what it is doing.
The Pepperoni Pizza
The Pizza Box calls themselves Michigan’s number one pizzeria, and after seeing this pizza it is not hard to understand why they feel confident making that claim. The pepperoni round comes loaded, the cheese is melted and golden, and the crust has the kind of structure that tells you the dough was made right. This is not a floppy, forgettable slice situation.
One thing worth knowing before you go: The Pizza Box sizes run big. Their small is a 12 inch, which is what most places call a medium. Their large is a 16 inch, which is an extra large almost everywhere else. So if you are ordering for one or two people, size down from what you would normally get. You are going to have more pizza than you planned for, which is never a bad problem to have.
The pepperoni selection is also worth mentioning. The Pizza Box uses both classic pepperoni and old world pepperoni on some of their specialty pies. Old world pepperoni is the thicker, cupped variety that crisps up and collects the grease in the center, which gives you that intense hit of flavor on every bite. Brandon went classic for his first order, but the Sixty6, which is half old world and half classic pepperoni, is clearly calling his name for the next visit.
The Cheese Bread
Classic cheese bread is one of those things that sounds simple but is very easy to get wrong. Underbake it and the cheese is rubbery. Overbake it and the edges are crackery and dry. The Pizza Box hit it right in the middle. Garlic-buttered dough topped with mozzarella and parmesan, baked to a golden finish. Brandon had no complaints, which from Brandon means it was good.
If you want to go a step further on your next order, the Cheesy Hot Honey Bread adds feta and a hot honey drizzle on top of the base cheese bread formula. That one is on the list.
The Vibe
The Pizza Box is located on Old Telegraph Road in Dearborn and they do both carryout and delivery through DoorDash. One thing that stood out is that their DoorDash prices are the same as in-store prices. No markup. That is rare and it is the kind of thing that builds loyalty fast.
The menu is also bigger than you might expect. Beyond the build-your-own options and classic specialty pies like The Supreme and The Carni4re, they have white sauce pizzas, loaded breads, chicken bites, salads, and a dessert lineup that includes a 10-ounce baked chocolate chip cookie and brownies. There is a lot going on in a good way.
The Bottom Line
Brandon went in with reasonable expectations and came out a fan. The pepperoni pizza delivered on every level: good dough, good cheese, quality toppings, and portions that are genuinely generous. The cheese bread was solid. The experience was exactly what a good local pizza spot should feel like.
