Some home improvement projects make a difference right away. Others really come together when you see the entire finished product. This Bloomfield Hills exterior transformation is a great example of what happens when the right siding, roofing, and trim colors work together.
At Level Up Improvement, we’ve had the opportunity to work on this beautiful Bloomfield Hills home more than once. We first updated the exterior with new board and batten siding. Then, we returned to install a new CertainTeed Landmark Pro roof in Espresso.
Now that we have before-and-after photos from several angles, we wanted to share how much the home has changed.
And there’s another part of this story we’re particularly proud of. Our work on this property also helped us earn the trust of the homeowners next door.
It Started With Board and Batten Siding
The first major improvement was replacing the home’s original siding.
The homeowners chose Ply Gem Classic Cream board and batten siding with Pebblestone Clay trim. It’s a combination that works especially well with the home’s existing light-colored brick.
The original exterior featured a Tudor-inspired design with wide trim boards and light-colored wall sections. It wasn’t a bad look, but the homeowners wanted something cleaner and more updated.
Board and batten was an excellent choice.
The vertical siding gives the home a more streamlined appearance. The Pebblestone Clay trim adds just enough contrast around the windows, corners, and rooflines without overwhelming the brick.
We also paid close attention to how the siding transitioned into the existing brickwork. Those details matter on a house with this many rooflines, windows, and architectural features.

The Next Step: A New CertainTeed Landmark Pro Roof
After completing the siding, we had another opportunity to work with these homeowners.
This time, they needed a new roof.
We installed CertainTeed Landmark Pro architectural shingles in Espresso, a rich, dark color that complements the lighter siding and brick.
The difference is especially noticeable when you look at the entire home.
Espresso provides a deeper, warmer appearance than a plain black roof. It also has subtle color variation that adds dimension to the shingles.
With the Classic Cream siding and Pebblestone Clay trim already in place, the new roof helped bring everything together.
Of course, a roof needs to do much more than look good.
Michigan homeowners deal with snow, ice, heavy rain, wind, and dramatic temperature changes. That’s why we focus on the entire roofing system, including flashing, ventilation, and water management.
CertainTeed’s Landmark Pro shingles offer the dimensional appearance and performance features homeowners expect from a premium architectural shingle.
We documented the roofing portion of this project in our earlier post about the Bloomfield Hills roof replacement with Landmark Pro Espresso shingles.
Bloomfield Hills Exterior Transformation: See the Before and After
Sometimes it’s hard to appreciate how much a house has changed until you put the old and new photos next to each other.
That’s exactly what we did here.
We photographed the property from multiple angles before and after the improvements. Looking at the comparisons, you can see how the new vertical siding changes the appearance of the second story and gables.
The lighter siding brightens the exterior, while the trim creates clean, consistent lines around the home.
The darker roof ties everything together without competing with the brick.
One thing we particularly like about this project is that we didn’t need to change the home’s character.
The existing brick, large windows, chimney, and architectural details still make this house unique. We simply updated the materials surrounding them.
It’s a good reminder that an exterior renovation doesn’t always require replacing everything.
Sometimes, choosing the right improvements makes all the difference.
The Details That Make a Difference
One of the challenges with this home is its architecture.
There are several roof elevations, multiple gables, large window openings, and numerous areas where siding meets roofing or masonry.
These transitions require careful attention.
When installing board and batten siding, the spacing and alignment need to look consistent. Crooked battens or poorly finished trim become especially noticeable on a large home.
The same applies to roofing.
Roof valleys, flashing, fascia, and penetrations all need proper attention. These areas help keep water moving away from the house.
During the roof replacement, we also identified a few cosmetic items that needed correction around the previously installed siding and fascia.
We addressed those details through our final punch-list process because we wanted the roofing work to complement the siding we had already installed.
That’s one advantage of working with the same contractor for multiple exterior projects.
We already knew the home, the materials, and the expectations.
Our Work Even Led to Another Project Next Door
Here’s one of our favorite parts of this story.
While we worked on the siding, the homeowners next door had a front-row seat to the installation.
They could see how our crews handled the project, how we maintained the property, and what the finished siding looked like.
Eventually, they trusted us with their own home.
For that neighboring property, we installed Almond board and batten siding with Pebblestone Clay trim.
The result was another beautiful exterior that complemented the neighborhood while maintaining its own style.
You can see that project in our blog about the neighboring Bloomfield board and batten siding installation.
As a family-owned company, earning business this way means a lot to us.
Anyone can make promises during a sales appointment. It’s another thing when someone watches your work firsthand and decides they want the same company working on their house.
That’s the kind of reputation we want to build throughout Oakland County.
Should You Replace Your Roof and Siding at the Same Time?
Not necessarily.
This Bloomfield Hills exterior transformation is a good example of why homeowners can benefit from planning exterior improvements in stages.
The siding came first. The roofing came later.
As long as the existing materials are in suitable condition, there’s no reason every exterior component needs replacement at once.
However, planning ahead is important.
Roofing, siding, flashing, fascia, and gutters all connect. If you’re considering multiple projects, your contractor should understand how one installation may affect another.
For example, certain flashing details may need attention when siding or roofing gets replaced.
Having a plan helps prevent unnecessary work and protects your investment.
If you’re unsure which project should come first, our roofing services and siding services can help you understand your options.

Another Bloomfield Hills Project We’re Proud Of
Looking at these before-and-after photos, we’re proud of how everything came together.
The home still has its original architectural character, but the updated siding and roof give it a cleaner, more coordinated appearance.
More importantly, we had the chance to build a lasting relationship with the homeowners.
We completed their siding, returned for their roof, and earned another project right next door.
That’s how we want to grow Level Up Improvement. One well-done project and one happy homeowner at a time.
