Ferndale Siding Project Update: One Week In and Almost Finished

After about a week of hard work, our Ferndale siding project is getting close to the finish line. The transformation from where this house started is already pretty dramatic, and we still have a few finishing touches left to complete.

When we first shared this Ferndale siding project, our crew had just started tearing off the old siding and preparing the exterior. We even found a few unexpected wasps and hornets hiding behind the old siding.

Since then, a lot has changed.

The new Natural Slate D4 siding is now covering most of the home. We have also made a lot of progress on the board and batten accent areas. After roughly a week on the job, you can finally see the complete design coming together.

A Big Week for Our Ferndale Siding Project

A full siding replacement takes more than simply covering a house with new material.

Over the past week, our crew has worked around the home one section at a time. We focused on getting the details right while keeping the project moving.

That includes working around windows and doors, installing trim, handling corners, and making sure each section flows into the next.

Those smaller details can take time, but they make a big difference in the finished exterior.

We don’t want to rush through the final stages just because a project is getting close to completion. Our goal is to leave the homeowner with a finished product that looks good from the street and up close.

Natural Slate D4 Siding Is Taking Shape

One of our favorite parts of this project has been watching the Natural Slate color take over the exterior.

The darker siding gives this Ferndale home a completely different appearance from where we started. It feels updated without looking out of place in the neighborhood.

Natural Slate is available in Mastic Carvedwood•44 siding, including a Double 4-inch traditional lap profile. The manufacturer lists Carvedwood•44 at a nominal .044-inch thickness and offers Natural Slate as one of its SolarDefense colors.

We spend a lot of time helping homeowners choose siding colors because the right color can completely change a house. It’s one thing to look at a small sample. It’s another to see that color across the entire exterior.

On this house, Natural Slate was a great choice.

Adding Board and Batten Accents

The board and batten sections are also starting to show why we chose to mix siding profiles on this home.

Most of the exterior uses traditional D4 lap siding. We then use board and batten in select areas to break things up and create more visual interest.

You don’t always need multiple colors to give a house some character. Sometimes changing the siding profile is enough.

The combination gives this home a more custom look while keeping the exterior clean and consistent.

Good Siding Work Comes Down to the Details

The big sections of new siding are what everyone notices first.

However, we’re paying just as much attention to everything around them.

Windows, doors, corners, soffits, fascia, utility penetrations, and trim all affect the final appearance. We want those areas to look clean and intentional.

We also continue taking photos throughout the job. That gives the homeowner a better look at what we’re doing and helps us document the work as the project moves forward.

Communication is a big part of our process. If we find something unexpected, we want the homeowner to know about it.

The City of Ferndale also maintains information for homeowners about permits and residential exterior work through its Building and Permit Center.

Almost Finished in Ferndale

We’re not calling this one finished quite yet.

After about a week of hard work, though, we’re getting very close.

The Natural Slate siding has completely changed the appearance of the house. The board and batten accents are bringing the design together, and our crew is working through the remaining details.

Once everything is complete, we’ll do our final checks and walk through the finished work.
