Siding Project in Ferndale, MI: Days 1 and 2
We’re currently working on a siding project in Ferndale, MI, and the first two days have been busy. Our crew started the tear-off and began preparing the house for its new exterior.
When we finish, this home will feature Natural Slate D4 lap siding with board and batten accents. We’re excited to see the combination come together.
Before the new siding goes up, though, we have plenty of prep work to do.
Day 1: Starting the Siding Tear-Off
Our crew started Day 1 by removing the existing siding.
Tearing off the old siding lets us see what has been hiding underneath. This is an important part of any siding replacement.
We check the exterior for damaged wood, moisture problems, old repairs, and other potential issues. We also pay close attention to areas around windows and doors.
Sometimes everything underneath looks great. Other times, we find something that needs our attention.
Either way, we want to know what we’re working with before installing the new siding.

An Unexpected Surprise During the Tear-Off
You never know exactly what you’ll find when you start opening up an older home.
On this project, we found wasps and hornets hiding behind the old siding.
It wasn’t a major problem, but it definitely made the tear-off more interesting for the crew.
We made a quick trip to the hardware store and grabbed some wasp and hornet spray. The crew handled the problem and got right back to work.
Things like this happen during remodeling projects. We can plan ahead for a lot, but we can’t see everything behind the existing siding.
When something unexpected comes up, we deal with it and keep the project moving.

Day 2: Preparing the Ferndale Home
On Day 2, our crew continued the tear-off and preparation work.
Good preparation matters just as much as the siding itself. We want a solid exterior before we start installing the finished product.
We inspect the exposed areas as we work around the house. We also focus on properly protecting the exterior from the elements.
House wrap plays an important role in that system. It helps manage moisture that may get behind the siding. It can also help reduce unwanted air movement through the walls.
The U.S. Department of Energy has more information about air sealing your home and why controlling air movement matters.
We also take photos throughout the project. If we find something unusual, we can show the homeowner exactly what we’re looking at.
That keeps everyone informed and prevents surprises.
Natural Slate D4 Siding With Board and Batten Accents
The preparation isn’t the most exciting part to look at, but it’s what sets up the finished product.
This house will get Natural Slate D4 lap siding across the main sections of the exterior. We’ll also use board and batten siding as an accent.
Mixing the two profiles should give this Ferndale home a great look.
The D4 lap siding keeps a traditional appearance across most of the house. The board and batten sections will add some contrast and help highlight certain areas.
Natural Slate is also a great color for this project. It gives the home a darker, updated appearance without going too bold.
We think it’s going to look completely different when we’re finished.

Next comes the transformation.
