Clawson Siding Replacement – Transformation Underway: Progress Update from Days 1 and 2

At Level Up Improvement, some of our favorite projects are the ones that completely transform the appearance of a home. This week, our crew is hard at work on a siding replacement project in Clawson, Michigan, just a few blocks southeast of downtown near the area around Bar Renshaw.

This older split-level home has great bones and a unique layout, but the exterior was ready for a major update. The homeowners wanted a fresh look that would modernize the home while maintaining the character of the neighborhood. After reviewing several options, they selected a combination that will provide both curb appeal and long-term durability.

The lower portion of the home is being upgraded with Ply Gem vinyl siding in Linen, while the upper section that previously featured T1-11 siding will be transformed with beautiful board and batten siding in Lakeshore Fern.

While the finished product is still a few days away, the first two days have already brought significant progress.

Understanding the Existing Exterior

Like many homes built decades ago throughout Clawson and Oakland County, this split-level featured multiple siding materials. The upper section of the home was covered with T1-11 siding, while the lower section had older aluminum siding.

T1-11 was a popular exterior panel product for many years because it was relatively affordable and easy to install. However, over time it can become susceptible to moisture damage, warping, cracking, and ongoing maintenance requirements. Paint and caulking often need regular attention to keep the panels protected.

The aluminum siding on the lower section had served its purpose for many years, but it was showing its age and no longer provided the clean appearance the homeowners were looking for.

The goal of this project is to create a cohesive exterior that combines the timeless look of horizontal siding with the modern style of board and batten accents.

Day 1: Tear Off and Preparation

The first day focused on demolition and preparation.

Our crew began by carefully removing the existing aluminum siding from the lower portion of the home. We also started the process of removing the aging T1-11 panels from the upper sections.

One of the most important parts of any siding project happens before the new siding is installed. Once the old materials are removed, we can evaluate the condition of the home’s exterior walls and identify any areas that may need attention.

Removing old siding allows us to inspect the wall assembly and verify that the home is ready for its new exterior. This step is critical because siding should never be installed over hidden problems.

As demolition progressed, the home immediately started looking different. While tear off can sometimes make a house look worse before it looks better, it is an important step toward creating a long-lasting installation.

By the end of Day 1, much of the old exterior had been removed and the home was ready for the next phase.

Day 2: Weather Barrier and Installation Progress

On Day 2, our focus shifted from removal to preparation and installation.

The crew continued removing remaining materials while beginning the process of preparing the walls for new siding. Proper preparation is one of the most overlooked aspects of siding replacement, but it plays a huge role in protecting a home from moisture intrusion.

Before new siding is installed, the walls must be properly wrapped and detailed to help manage water and air infiltration. This creates an additional layer of protection behind the finished siding system.

Once preparation was complete in several areas, installation of the new exterior materials began.

The Linen-colored Ply Gem siding immediately brightened the lower section of the home. Linen is one of the most popular siding colors in Michigan because it offers a clean, timeless appearance that complements a wide range of architectural styles.

At the same time, work began on the Lakeshore Fern board and batten sections.

Board and batten siding has become increasingly popular throughout Clawson, Royal Oak, Birmingham, and surrounding communities because it adds depth and visual interest to a home’s exterior. The vertical lines create a modern farmhouse-inspired appearance while still fitting beautifully into established neighborhoods.

The Lakeshore Fern color provides a rich, natural look that contrasts perfectly with the lighter Linen siding below. Together, the combination creates a balanced design that feels both updated and welcoming.

Why Color Selection Matters

One of the things we love most about this project is the color combination.

Rather than choosing a single siding color for the entire home, the homeowners selected complementary colors that highlight the split-level design.

The Linen siding on the lower portion helps brighten the exterior and provides a classic foundation. Meanwhile, the Lakeshore Fern board and batten adds character and creates a focal point on the upper sections of the home.

These types of design choices can dramatically improve curb appeal without changing the structure of the house itself.

More Progress to Come With This Clawson Siding Replacement

Although we are only through the first two days of construction, the transformation is already becoming visible.

The old T1-11 panels and aging aluminum siding are disappearing, and the home’s new identity is beginning to take shape. Once installation is complete and all finishing details are finalized, this Clawson home will have a completely refreshed exterior that looks modern while still fitting naturally within the neighborhood.

We are excited to continue sharing progress updates as this project moves forward.
