Vinyl Shake Siding Lincoln Park That Actually Looks This Good
Vinyl shake siding in Lincoln Park, MI just got a serious upgrade, and this back dormer project is proof that the right material choice makes all the difference.
Over the weekend, the Level Up Improvement crew headed out to Lincoln Park, MI to tackle a dormer that needed more than a patch job. The fascia and soffit were due for replacement, and the back dormer needed new siding. The catch? Matching the existing aluminum siding on the rest of the house was not a realistic option. Instead of forcing a match that was never going to look right, we made a smarter call: change the texture intentionally and make it a design feature.
What We Installed
We went with Plygem Hand Split Shakes in Montana Suede with white trim throughout. The Hand Split Shake profile has that natural wood shake look with deep shadow lines and varied surface texture, but it is 100% vinyl, so it holds up without the maintenance headaches that come with real wood.
Montana Suede is a warm, earthy neutral that reads as intentional. Paired with crisp white fascia and soffit, the dormer now looks like it belongs on a completely different level than the rest of the original exterior. In a good way.
Why Vinyl Shake on a Dormer Works
Dormers are one of the trickiest spots on a house when it comes to siding replacement. They sit up high, they collect weather, and they are usually on a different plane than the main walls, which means matching existing siding almost never works cleanly, especially on older homes with aluminum.
Rather than hunting down a discontinued profile or putting up something close enough, using a shake profile on the dormer creates a deliberate contrast. It draws the eye up, breaks up a flat exterior, and looks like a design choice because it is one.
Vinyl Shake Siding Lincoln Park: Why It Makes Sense Here
Lincoln Park, MI homes are solid, older stock with a lot of original aluminum siding and a lot of character worth preserving. But aluminum does not last forever, and when it starts showing its age, vinyl shake is one of the best ways to refresh a section of the house without a full reside.
Plygem’s Hand Split Shake profile is built for Michigan weather. It will not rot, warp, or need painting, and the insulated versions add a layer of thermal performance while they are at it. For a dormer taking direct wind and rain, that durability matters.
Fascia and Soffit Replacement
New fascia and soffit were part of this job too, and they always should be when you are reworking a section like this. Old fascia hides a lot: rotted wood, pest damage, gaps that let moisture into the roof system. Getting it replaced at the same time as the siding means everything is sealed, fresh, and matched. White trim pulled the whole dormer together and gave it a clean finish line against the shake.
The Result
What started as a siding problem with no clean match turned into one of the sharper-looking dormers we have put together. Montana Suede shakes, white trim, new fascia and soffit. The whole back of the house looks intentional now instead of pieced together.
